The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.96% or 1.51 points to trade at 52.46 at the close. Meanwhile, Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 1.89% or 2.97 points to end at 160.30 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 1.74% or 2.18 points to 127.48 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which fell 1.32% or 3.17 points to trade at 236.38 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 0.51% or 1.02 points to end at 198.01 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was down 0.49% or 0.52 points to 105.59.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 6.67% to 2.560, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which was up 4.61% to settle at 10.99 and Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ:EA) which gained 4.59% to close at 94.57.
The worst performers were Ralph Lauren Corp Class A (NYSE:RL) which was down 3.68% to 113.93 in late trade, Xylem Inc (NYSE:XYL) which lost 1.80% to settle at 75.42 and Church & Dwight Company Inc (NYSE:CHD) which was down 1.65% to 72.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Insys Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:INSY) which rose 30.51% to 1.24, National Security Group Inc (NASDAQ:NSEC) which was up 24.85% to settle at 14.27 and Novavax Inc (NASDAQ:NVAX) which gained 23.78% to close at 7.130.
The worst performers were Bison Capital Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BCAC) which was down 54.95% to 4.69 in late trade, Fuel Tech Inc (NASDAQ:FTEK) which lost 35.08% to settle at 1.610 and Solid Biosciences LLC (NASDAQ:SLDB) which was down 28.59% to 6.32 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2246 to 786 and 36 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1940 rose and 716 declined, while 73 ended unchanged.
Shares in Bison Capital Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BCAC) fell to all time lows; falling 54.95% or 5.72 to 4.69. Shares in Solid Biosciences LLC (NASDAQ:SLDB) fell to all time lows; losing 28.59% or 2.53 to 6.32.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 12.12% to 18.06.
Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.33% or 4.25 to $1297.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.49% or 0.30 to hit $61.34 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.10% or 0.07 to trade at $70.93 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1205, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 109.61.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.23% at 97.340.
